John Pietaro

JOHN PIETARO is a cultural worker from Brooklyn, New York. He is a percussionist and vocalist (with doubles on banjo and guitar) who has performed for progressive and New Music events throughout the area, sharing the stage with Alan Ginsberg, Karl Berger, John Zorn, Amiri and Amina Baraka, Fred Ho, Pete Seeger, Dar Williams, Elodie Lauten, Ben Barson, Matt Jones, Anne Feeney, Bev Grant, and Tuli Kupferberg among many others. Pietaro serves as Xylophonist/Percussionist for his new quartet Radio NOIR ( which released a 4-song EP, The Lost Broadcast  (2011) and performs in the NY area. He is also a member of Karl Berger’s Stone Workshop Orchestra and an active freelancer. Pietaro has acted as front-man for The Flames of Discontent which recorded two CDs: I Dreamed I Heard Joe Hill Last Night (2005) and Revenge of the Atom Spies (2007). He is a contributing writer to ‘Z’ magazine, ‘The Nation’, ‘Political Affairs’,  ‘the People’s World’, and other Left periodicals and wrote a chapter for the Harvey Pekar/Paul Buhle book Students for a Democratic Society: A Graphic History (Hill & Wang, 2007). Pietaro is the founder and director of the annual Dissident Arts Festival, among other radical concerts and has spoken on revolutionary culture at Left Forum (2011).  By day, Pietaro works in the labor movement.
