The Politics of Disablement

Michael Oliver, New York: St. Martin’s Press
Oliver challenges dominant views of disability as an individual and medical “problem” and argues that disability is a problem of society, not for disabled persons as individuals and that it is society that has to change.  The book offers key insights on capitalism and disablement.

Beyond Ramps

Disability at the End of the Social Contract
Marta Russell, Maine: Common Courage Press
In Beyond Ramps, Russell presents a view of disablement within the context of radical politics.  A stinging critique of disability under capitalism, this book exposes the negatives of neoliberalism applied to disability public policy as well as neoliberalism’s effect on the lives of disabled and nondisabled individuals in the United States.
