If We Believe that We’re All the Same

If we believe that we’re all the same
A living breathing organism
Then why is our world full of
Humans who count and humans who don’t
Humans with everything and humans without
Humans who kill in the name of power
Humans who die in the name of power
Humans we love and humans we hate
Humans who are like us and humans that are discriminate
Humans that aren’t the same at all
Humans who aren’t human

We have international law to feel human
And we kill kill kill
Then we play play play
The bureaucratic game
To find out who’s to blame
And we feel no shame

Someone as young as myself must ask
Since when is it a shame to be a pacifist?
Since when is it a shame to be a humanist?
Since when is it a shame to be a feminist?
Since when does “pro-life” mean I have no right over my body?
Since when does “pro-choice” mean I’m a sinner?
Since when is it a shame to call another “my brother”?
And why, when I ask, am I a traitor?

At what point do we say
That one isn’t like me
That one is less
That one doesn’t deserve to live
That one must die a horrible death
That one and others like him shouldn’t exist
I need to take up my gun
I need to teach it to my son
I am the only one

I will stand between your barrel and my brothers
You will be my brother, too, when you put the gun down
We are all one
You are one of us
You will cry when you realize what you’ve done
And I will hold you in my arms
And I will tell you the time has come
Time to plant
Time to build
Time to teach
Time to love
Time to mix
There are no strangers among us
If we believe that we’re all the same
