Although credit for inventing the telescope is often ascribed to Galileo, Galileo himself knew that was untrue. Indeed, we know, he wrote, the Hollander who was first to invent the telescope was a simple maker of ordinary spectacles who in casually handling pieces of glass of various sorts happened to look through two at once, one convex and the other concave, and placed at different distances from the eye. In this way, he observed the resulting effect, and thus discovered the instrument.
