Israelis and Palestinians have agreed to an indefinite ceasefire, ending Israel’s 50-day assault on the Gaza Strip. Palestinian health officials say 2,139 people, most of them civilians — including more than 490 children — were killed in the Israeli offensive. Israel’s death toll stood at 64 soldiers and six civilians. The ceasefire deal was mediated by Egyptian officials in Cairo and took effect on Tuesday evening. It calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities, an opening of Gaza’s blockaded crossings with Israel and Egypt, and a widening of the territory’s fishing zone in the Mediterranean. Live from Gaza City, we are joined by the award-winning Palestinian journalist Mohammed Omer. “There are more and more people in the different parts of the Gaza Strip who are trying to resume their life and just bring it back to normal, but I must say that the damage is beyond imagination,” Omer says. “We are talking about thousands of homes that have been completely and partially demolished, and over 130 mosques and over 140 schools.”

I want to note that I wrote 5775 next to the Star of David. It’s year in the Hebrew calendar New Year beginning Sept. 24, 2014; I use the art to mark the Jewish New Year.
I heard the show “real time” and I just reread the transcript: there are more good quotes than I was able to commit to memory. Each good quote could be a basis for a piece of art.
For the whole 5 weeks of the Israeli attack on Gaza, I was “glued” to DemocracyNow broadcasts on ‘my” radio station, WBAI (I listen to DemNow anyway since it’s first show, but I was really “glued” to attention about Gaza.)
Between Gaza and Ferguson coverage, I have been in a state of churning, doing art as can, my contribution to the struggle. After many years of thought about how to do it, “FOR GAZA, I REJECT MY ‘RIGHT OF RETURN’ TO ISRAEL” (Star of David drawn) written in red paint on my studio table in the midst of a collage; see description below the
art, on my Flickr public photostream page:

Sometimes serendipity floats into my world and something lands outside my window: once every bunch of years. The first was a piece of magazine that I used in my 1996 piece of art, a wearable sign,
EQUAL JUSTICE FOR ALL FROM THE TOP ON DOWN” using the piece of magazine images and symbols for disability and collage and my invented feminized universal wheelchair symbol. It is used in many of my art pieces since 1996, and is right in the top row on the flickr collection of now 48.
The newest, serendipity, was a newspaper page floating down, which landed on one side and I figured it would blow away and I ignored it. When I looked again, it had a story on Gaza that led me to
“GOEBBEL’S DYBBUK-RAG”, the newest piece, #48.
I took a photo of the page, added my words inside the machine and posted it.
