Due to the Japanese invasion of Malaya-Singapore during WWII, began working at 9 (after my father's imprisonment and demise at the hands of the Japanese invaders), and after four years' secondary schooling post-war, dropped out for good. Worked and studied in my spare time in Seremban, Kuala Lumpur, London, Heidelberg, West Berlin, Madrid and Paris. Worked sporadically as a journalist in Kuala Lumpur, London and Madrid. Taught primary and secondary school classes in Seremban and Madrid. Lectured in literature at the University of Maryland (European Division), the Sorbonne-Nouvelle, and South-Asian Area Studies at AGSIRD (Arcadia University in Paris). Also lectured in Politics for the Commonwealth Institute in London. Was a Research Fellow with the French National Centre for Scientific Research (C.N.R.S.), from 1973 to 1998. Have been writing since my school-days and still do (Check www.cyberwit.net/authors/TWignesan for my books and for some 1200 of my poems at www.poetrysoup.com/me/TWignesan). Founder-Editor of the Journal of Comparative Poietics and The "Asianists' ASIA".
National Status: STATELESS (Convention of New York 1954). Deprived of my citizenship rights in Malaysia during 1961-62 and was "expelled" from the country. Had to revert to my then "colonial status" with a renewed British Passport which was confiscated by the British Consul in Madrid, Spain, in 1967. The Spanish authorities then coerced me into declaring myself a "Stateless Person", but, then, they refused to grant me the statutory "Travel Document". Somehow I managed to obtain a two-week "visitor permit" to the U.K. in 1972, and found myself stranded in Paris with my ex-and my 4-year old son. Chief Editor André Fontaine published my "Témoignage" (in Le Monde, December 18, 1972, p.2) and President George Pompidou personally intervened by special courier while I was being grilled at the French Police HQ to have my temporary residence papers delivered to me. And since then, I have known nothing but hell
here ! But, "many thanks to some very big names" all the same !
