In this June 2005 talk at the Z Media Institute, Chomsky lays out the most important issues facing us today–nuclear apocalypse, environmental catastrophe, and the “democracy deficit.” Classic Chomsky, he covers the war in Iraq, the U.S. policy of obtaining strategic power and critical leverage over its key rivals, and the hypocrisy of the U.S. “messianic vision” of bringing “democracy” and “freedom” to every corner of the world while violating democratic principles, international law, and increasing the threat of terror. He closes by pointing out that the entire U.S. system–the government and economy–is fragile, and that the openings for reaching people with progressive messages about peace and justice have never been better.
