The title of this blog post is accurate unlike the AP’s headline to an article today by Ernesto Towar.
A group of ex Latin American presidents and other opposition folks demanded to meet with Leopoldo Lopez in prison and were refused. An AP headline concluded
“Crisis-hit Venezuela bars ex-presidents from talks with opposition”
The actual text of Towar’s article refutes the idiotic headline, unless the AP is seriously proclaiming that Lopez is the opposition.
Note that Reuters, whom I very often criticize, has at least mentioned the following facts about Lopez (excerpt from a Reuters article below):
The government paints Lopez, who is an economist by training, as a dangerous maverick and often reminds Venezuelans of his role in a short-lived 2002 coup against Chavez when he helped arrest a minister and haul him through a mob.
Here is a video of Lopez leading that “arrest” – actually a kidnapping given that it was illegal.
Here is Telesur article that explains “Former right-wing presidents of Chile and Colombia attempted to visit an opposition leader in prison without obtaining the necessary permits….Both presidents are participating in a forum that began Jan. 26 in Caracas which was organized by the Venezuelan right-wing opposition front Unity Table (Mesa de Unidad, MUD).”
