Today’s NYT editorial “The Left on the Run in Latin America” underscores that there never really was a “good left” as far as U.S. elites were concerned. For years, Brazil’s left government was part of the “good left” that received vastly better press than Venezuela and other ALBA countries. It would have been very unwise to try to demonize all the left governments in the region once. But now, as far as the NYT editorial board is concerned, a cynical parliamentary coup in Brazil has simply installed a “new “ government.
As always, Colombia, the state with the worst human rights record in the region by far, an internally displaced population second in size only to Syria’s, is offered as one of the success stories of US foreign policy. It never ceases to amaze how much a “free press” can sweep under the rug. Then again, the United States could quite possibly end up with a white supremacist endorsed president. Perhaps we all quickly need to learn not to be surprised.
Bombshell revelations reported by Glenn Greenald prove what a disgusting affair the parliamentary coup was. Anyone who is not a right wing extremest – or NYT editorial board member – no longer has any excuse to avoid using the “coup” word.
