We were not like the old regime
Of Levellers and Diggers,
Conferring Rights and distributing
Income to “we the people,”
As if the treasury belonged to them.
We righted the distortion
Soon as we came,
And began to return wealth
To its proper owners, namely our
Bountiful nationalist donors.
Where the rigors of fact began
To rebuke governance, we
Shamed them into compliance
By creatively rearranging figures.
Even the World Bank knows better,
But for its own devious ends,
Is willing to say yes, yes, yes.
The sages of old taught us
That nothing ever changes.
Thus governance is at bottom
A Houdini act. You conjure that
Which in reality you do not enact.
