Undoubtedly things are getting worse but frankly, the UK has always been authoritarian. Even when universal voting rights came in, with its first-past-the-post electoral system and the unelected House of Lords, it is undemocratic. Its class system, which has ensured the same systems and people are in control, has endured. They should have been thrown out after the debacle of the First World War but they’ve not only clung on, they’ve been able to entrench their power and wealth.
