The Twist

How a body can twist when it’s dead
How words can twist when they’re dead
How a life can twist when it’s under occupation
How the world can twist when it’s avoiding answers

Who’s going to account for all these scars?
Who’s going to account for all this trauma?
Who’s going to account for all this death?
Who’s going to account for all these hungry survivors?

Who’s going to account for all these twisted bodies?
Who’s going to account for all these twisted words?
Who’s going to account for all these twisted lives?
Who’s going to account for all these questions?

Who’s going to lie to his child?
Who’s going to tell him that it’s a wonderful world?
Who’s going to send him off to carry a gun, to kill another man’s son?
Who’s going to tell him he’s a hero?

When do we stop the killing?
When do we fight for us?
When do we raise our children right?
When do we ask the right questions?

Is there another choice?
Can I do better?
Haven’t I had enough?
Don’t I want to live?

How a life can twist when it’s living a lie
How endurance can twist when it’s living a lie
How intent can twist when it’s living a lie
How a choice can twist when it’s living a lie

Children have a right to grow old
Women have a right to their bodies
Men have a right to their families
Human beings have a right not to fight

How children can twist in pain
How women can twist in fear
How men can twist with a gun to their head
How human beings can twist when they’re dead
