Prof. Dr. Dr. hc mult Johan Galtung, born 1930 in Oslo, founded Peace Studies as an academic discipline in 1958. He has published 143 books translated into 34 languages, over 1,500 articles on peace and related issues, and mediated in over 100 conflicts around the world. He founded TRANSCEND-A Network for Peace, Development and Environment (www.transcend.org) in 1993 and was the first rector of the TRANSCEND Peace University.
