In the history of the world over the last two hundred years or so the colonial and imperial powers unleashed many wars, including two world wars. Their main objectives were taking possession of the resources of weaker nations abroad and profit-making for the weapon industries and corporate interests at home. Nationalistic jingoism in the hands of imperialists has been a favourite instrument to gain support and sympathy for wars and hide the destructive aspects of wars. Of course, there were also mutual rivalries and competitions for imperial expansion and the acquisition of new markets for their products amongst the leading imperial powers.
But at this moment I am not going to discuss all factors that go into making the present-day wars such as the US-wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Israel’s wars to maintain its illegal occupation over the Palestinians’ land and its expansion by systematic settlements. To write about these issues adequately we need to look into the various factors and policy issues. Simplistic platitudes may have some value but they are not sufficient to explain all aspects of present-day wars.
Secondly, most of my Facebook friends come from various regions, countries, from different cultural, religious and political backgrounds. Occasionally some simple facts can make people think and question their long-held views. There are people who think that any historical and political views we present should be couched in complicated and erudite language that give them the appearance of being profound and meaningful. But I don’t share such a perspective. Profound facts can also be expressed in simple and clear language, the sort of language ordinary people can also understand.
