I live amidst thousands of years of indigenous history here on Turtle Island. The Anishinabek (the Odawa, Ojibwe and Potawattomi) talk of current issues, pre-Columbian history and 500 years of genocide. There are countless oral histories and plenty of written literature on the subject, but my study of indigenous European history is sparse. Amidst a few of my studies – several years ago – was the simple observation by a writer. To paraphrase: Whereas America’s indigenous peoples have had to endure 500 years of genocial invasion and occupation, Ireland, too, has had to survive 800 years of genocidal pressures.
